Gawler Place Intersection

The vision for Gawler Place is marked by a vertical green wall open portal. This urban scaled element is at once surprising and adds character to the space. There is also the potential to provide additional experiences such as shade (temporary or permanent), microclimate and seasonal colour.

To the north of this portal in Gawler Place a special zone for places of performance and gathering could be defined through a distinguishing paving pattern. Adjoining this space a curved timber seating element could create an active edge to a piazza and a sinuous link to the north to a children’s play area. The play area is integrated with public art or with raised greening elements.

The height of the timber seating element should not exceed 750mm in height to provide seating at 3 levels and maintain sight lines. The piazza creates universal access and provides the opportunity for a central element (sculpture/stage etc.).

Suspended between the green portal and performance space could be a random series of catenary cables supporting lighting. The density of the lighting could increase towards the centre of the performance zone. The activation of upper level edges around the performance space will also create a vibrant atmosphere.
