City Precinct Linkages
The Rundle Mall Precinct is the most accessible precinct in the City and the whole of South Australia and is therefore the key catalyst for a larger renewal process throughout Adelaide.
Regional Accessibility
There are also a number of other popular key City precincts within walking distance or connected to the Rundle Mall Precinct by regular bus or tram services. These include:
- Adelaide Central Market and China Town
- Adelaide Oval
- Adelaide Zoo
- Gouger Street
- O’Connell Street
- Melbourne Street
- Hutt Street
- Adelaide Parklands
- Adelaide Entertainment Centre
- Hindmarsh Stadium
Key City Precincts
Strengthening the links between these areas and the Rundle Mall Precinct will help to create an accessible full City experience particularly for tourists.
Activating pedestrian links between the Cultural Precinct on North Terrace and Rundle Mall, through Gawler Place, Charles Street, Austin Street and Stephens Place could draw visitors between North Terrace and Rundle Mall, benefiting both precincts.
Restaurants, cafes, cinemas (Nova and Palace), bars, pubs and clubs are key entertainment destinations in the City and are concentrated within the adjoining Rundle Street and Hindley Street precincts. Rundle Mall businesses currently receive limited benefit from these precincts as entertainment uses tend to have a night focus, while the vast majority of Rundle Mall businesses are closed by 6pm.
Adjoining Precincts
Increasing evening activities in the Rundle Mall Precinct could enhance the linkages between these precincts and consequently the vibrancy of the area. This is currently being evidenced by the recent extension to trading hours to 7pm where foot traffic has increased by 15% per month.
There are also a number of key emerging precincts that are anticipated to benefit from being in close proximity and/or accessible to the Rundle Mall Precinct. These precincts include:
- Victoria Square
- Riverbank
- Adelaide Oval redevelopment
Emerging Precincts
New development within these precincts has the potential to increase overall activity in the City.
The Rundle Mall Master Plan provides the greatest opportunity to strengthen the links between all key City precincts to maximise the benefits of renewal activities across the whole City.
